So, is it worth it taking a look
at Smite?
WARNING: This article assumes
you, the reader, have basic knowledge of MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battleground
Arena) games. If you don’t, you won’t understand anything, just saying ;)
The moba genre has been evolving
a lot in the past few years, thanks to the boom of League of Legends, and the competitive
of Dota 2. Because of this, a LOT of new moba games have appeared, as companies
try to make profit in the videogame market with what seems people currently
likes. This has generated a lot of controversy from the gamers: From people
that see it as an opportunity for moba games to evolve, to people that say
companies are just copying dota 2 and League of Legends. In this context, it
appeared an original moba game: Smite.
Smite is a moba, and as a moba,
it shares a lot of characteristics with League of legends, the currently most
popular moba (and with difference!). But, Smite is unique in a couple of ways:
First of all, all the playable characters are actual gods from different
pantheons, like for instance the Egyptian, the Greek, or the Chinese. Ever wondered who would win if Odin and Zeus battled each other? Make it happen! And
second: It’s the first third person moba game (I'm gonna exclude Dungeon Defender 2 because it got delayed, and in the alpha, well, it didn't quite work well XD).
Third person camera? Hell yeah!
Aside from that, it’s a LOT like League of Legends, and that’s translated as “The difficulty curve is not as punishing as in Dota 2”, which is great news for new players, and bad news for hardcore players. Hardcore players, please, stick to Dota 2 and let the other people try the genre J .

Also, in Smite EVERYTHING is a
skillshot. That includes basic attacks. Becoming an adc is more difficult now!
Getting used to it may take some time, but once you’ve done it, it feels great,
and works perfectly, imho. More new things: Last hitting is easier. And I mean
a LOT easier. To the point that even if you don’t last hit, you’ll still
receive gold from the enemy minion deaths! Of course, you still get more gold
if you last hit. But it’s an ingenious way to reduce the skill cap, and reduce
snowballing in more professional games, which is something you may or may not
like! Since the game is in beta, the developers are trying some weird things, like the addition of different game modes, stats, etc. But overall, things work quite similar to the MOBA standard. We even have the classic 5 vs 5 3 lane map, with its own "drake" (golden fury) and its own "baron" (fire giant), its "inhibitors" (phoenixes) and its own nexus, the minotaur. This one has the characteristic of attacking the enemies, so it's a bit different from League too. Overall, and keeping in mind that the game is still in beta and in progress, Smite is a great addition to the moba genre! Keep track of it if you like this kind of games!
